Sodexho meets royalty at Queen Mary's Hospital, Roehampton

Sodexho Healthcare was in attendance at the official opening of the new £55 million PFI Queen Mary's Hospital in Roehampton, London, last month.

His Royal Highness the Duke of Gloucester officially opened the hospital's new state of the art building on 1 November. HRH was invited to tour the building and see a snapshot of the work carried out at the hospital and as he toured the building he met many of the hospital staff that help deliver a high quality health service for Queen Mary's patients.

Among those who were introduced to HRH were three employees managed under the contract with Sodexho Healthcare. Emmanuel Bilson, a domestic at the hospital since 2003; Frank Kenga a hospital porter at the hospital for the past five years and hospital chef Jack Villajos Nevado who has worked at the hospital for 35 years.

Wandsworth PCT chose Catalyst Healthcare in early 2002 as the private sector partner for the redevelopment of Queen Mary's Hospital. A number of organisations make up the consortium: Catalyst Healthcare Management has overall management of the scheme Bovis Lend Lease has responsibility for the construction, lifecycling, equipment supply and maintenance service; HBOS has funded the project and Sodexho is the integrated facilities management services provider.

The services which Sodexho delivers at Queen Mary's include: building and property services; domestic services; catering for patients, staff and visitors; portering; linen and laundry; helpdesk, switchboard and hospital main reception; security; pest control; waste disposal; car parking; non emergency patient transport; window cleaning; postal services; receipt and distribution of supplies.

Iain Anderson, managing director Sodexho Healthcare said: “After three years in construction it is great to see the new hospital fully operational. We have worked closely with the Trust to ensure there has been a smooth transfer from the old to new hospital and our staff have met the challenge this has thrown them. Everyone at the hospital is pleased with the new hospital and we look forward to continuing to providing a quality healthcare service for the local community.”

Construction of the new four storey building began in 2003 within the original hospital grounds. The new Queen Mary's provides outpatient rapid diagnostic and treatment facilities, mental health community services, a minor injuries unit, burns dressing clinic, limb fitting services, a sexual health clinic, 69 mental healthcare beds, 50 elderly and intermediate care beds and 20 rehabilitation beds.
